In 2001 Howard entered the Pastel Journal magazines nationwide competition. His painting was selected as one of the top 100 finalists among 2500 entries. The painting was published in the March/April 2002 edition. Additionally, his painting was selected to be used in the International Artist magazines book on How to Paint Landscapes that was published worldwide in August 2004.
